In Canada and the
United States, disabled persons are entitled to the Social Security Disability
Insurance, a program where they get regular compensation until they regain
their health after an accident or sickness. For those who can never work again,
they will receive the benefit until retirement age. Funded by employed
taxpayers, these recipients are required to prove that their disability
prevents them from working temporarily or permanently.
Although they
aren't required to hire an attorney to apply for benefits, having legal
representation has its benefits.
- Success. Having a lawyer increases one's
chances for getting approval. When choosing one, interview him about the
cases he's handled and his success rate
- Expertise. A reputable lawyer should know how
to handle the necessary paperwork, file the proper documents, and
cross-examine medical experts who may challenge his client's claim.
- Cost. Get a lawyer who works on a contingency
basis, or has no up-front fee, and won't charge if your disability claim
fails. However, be prepared to pay for other fees such as acquiring
medical records
Pursuing a Social
Security disability benefit can be a difficult task with no assurance of
receiving compensation, but with a competent lawyer at your side, you are given
that ray of hope of getting what you deserve.
